BIFA Accomplishment

Since Chulalongkorn University signed the contract with the Bangkok Fashion City Project on July 26, 2004, tons of works have been lined up for the university to complete in the tight deadline. Right after the signing ceremony, BIFA was built and started its mission to produce 600 students via 3 long-term courses and 15 short-term courses. BIFA ended up with 1600 students in 6 long-term courses and 15 short-term courses in 18 months. BIFA became a successful story that created impacts, interest, and inspirations in fashion industry nationally and internationally. Followings are all the terms of reference assigned, and the output that was made under this miracle project.

1. Build the school, form an organization, recruit staff

Completed before the BIFA Grand Opening on Dec 15, 2004.

2. Make the PR plan

BIFA PR plan was made and followed. BIFA was publicized via several media.

3. Establish collaborations with at least three international institutes

BIFA has signed the MOU with 3 institutes:
1. Fashion Institute of Technology, New York (FIT)
2. Institut Francaise de la Mode, Paris (IFM)
3. Politechnico de la Moda, Florence (POLIMODA)
Another 2 agreements for academic cooperation was signed with:
1. University of Central England in Birmingham (UCE)
2. Bunka Gakuen Educational Foundation, Tokyo

4. Develop a proposal to open three long-term (6-month) courses and
fifteen short-term courses

BIFA developed three 9-month, full-time programs in Graduate Diploma level that were entirely taught in English by professors from collaborating international institutes. Each program comprises twelve 2-credit subjects.
1. Fashion Design (FD), IFM
2. Fashion Merchandising (FM), FIT
3. Fashion Technology and Management (FT), FIT
Furthermore, BIFA made another two 6-month programs. Each contains seven 14-credit subjects
4. Leatherwear Design & Business (FL), POLIMODA
5. Jewelry Design & Business (FJ), UCE

As for the short-term courses, BIFA planned to host 17 courses that would also be instructed by professors from accredited institutes.

3. Innovative Textile Design by Komol Phaboraan, as endorsed by FIT
4. Web page Design for Fashion by BUNKA
5. CAD/CAM - "Graphic Design for Fashion" by BUNKA

7. Fashion Marketing Strategy for Jewelry Business by FIT
8. Fashion Terminology by FIT
9. From Concept to Consumer by FIT
10. Fashion Design (Intensive) by France Embassy and Thai professionals
11. Fashion Color and Forecasting by Elementi Moda, Italy
12. Supply Chain and Logistics by FIT
13. Global Fashion System by Hongkong Polytechnic University
14. Fashion Trend Interpretation by BUNKA
15. Fabric Properties and Selection by BUNKA
16. Updated Textile Finishing by BUNKA
17. Fashion Visualization by POLIMODA

5. Create criteria and plan for scholarships

BIFA announced 3 winners who will be arranged to study abroad in FIT and IFM with the budget of 1.5 million baht per winner:
Fashion Design - Mr.Chalermkiat Khatikasemlart
Fashion Merchandising - Miss Supang Trongkamonthum
Fashion Technology and Management - Mr.Bhichai Burana

6. Open at least half of the proposed short courses

BIFA had planned to open 17 short courses. There were 16 courses actually provided. The 17th course, Fashion Visualization, was cancelled due to the time conflict.

7. Gain not less than 600 successful unique attendees

7.1 Gain 150 attendees in Fashion Design (FD) courses
BIFA made 13 successful students in long-term FD program and 450 in short-term. (313 heads over the TOR.)
7.2 Gain 210 attendees in Fashion Technology and Management (FT) courses
BIFA made 18 successful students in long-term FT program and 574 in short-term. (382 heads over the TOR.)
7.3 Gain 240 attendees in Fashion Merchandising (FM) courses
BIFA made 16 successful students in long-term FM program and 499 in short-term. (275 heads over the TOR.)

BIFA also gained 16 attendees from a 'neutral' course like Fashion Terminology. Another 64 successful attendees were made from Fashion Trend Interpretation, which is considered an FD, FM course.

8. Establish a permanent fashion institute and develop the assessment plan.

The working committee of Chulalongkorn University is to develop a plan to found an independent fashion institute under direction of Chulalongkorn University. The institute must be self-sustainable and acknowledgeable internationally. The organization will follow the model of Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration (GIBA), having its own board of directors, executive board, and administration office to support the operation.

9. Provide long-term courses as specified in the proposal

BIFA openned a 9-month FD course with 13 students, a 9-month FT course with 18 students, a 9-month FM course with 16 students, a 6-month FL course with 15 students, and a 9-month FJ course with 18 students.

10. Accomplish all the assignments within 18-month period of the project.

BIFA has already produced the output for all of the above assignments. The remaining closing works are on their way to be completed by midnight of January 25, 2006 when the project is officially terminated. Mission Accomplished!
